Iranian President’s Visit to Pakistan Highlights Diplomatic Role in West Asia

Islamabad: Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan highlights Islamabad’s growing prominence as a diplomatic mediator in West Asia, following its role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. The visit underscores both symbolic and strategic elements, marking a new phase in Pakistan-Iran relations.

According to Sardar Masood Khan, the former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, the United Nations, and the former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, this visit acknowledges Pakistan’s efforts in averting regional conflict and enhancing its international reputation as a credible mediator. Discussions between the two nations are expected to focus on the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, with Pakistan and Qatar playing key roles in the peace process.

Khan emphasized the potential to transform economic relations between Pakistan and Iran through enhanced cooperation in trade and energy. He outlined the importance of formalizing trade in electricity and oil, boosting bilateral trade to a target of $10 billion, and progressing on the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline. The visit also presents an opportunity to improve border management and counterterrorism efforts.

Pakistan’s ports have played a vital role during regional crises, facilitating cargo movement to Iran. Khan suggested institutionalizing this trade corridor and developing complementarity between Gwadar and Chabahar ports to enhance regional connectivity. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is seen as a positive step for global energy markets, with ongoing confidence-building measures deemed essential for sustained stability.

Khan concluded by stating that Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements have strengthened its role as a facilitator of dialogue and a contributor to regional peace. President Pezeshkian’s visit is viewed as a chance to consolidate diplomatic achievements and expand economic cooperation, showcasing Pakistan’s capacity to contribute to a stable and cooperative Middle East.
