Islamabad: Thailand’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Rongvudhi Virabutr, and the renowned monk Most Venerable Anil Sakiya met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Division, Mr. Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, to discuss enhancing cooperation for the preservation of Buddhist heritage sites in Pakistan. Both sides agreed to work together to promote and preserve Pakistan’s Buddhist civilization and heritage.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting underscored the historical and spiritual significance of Pakistan, especially highlighting Taxila’s role in the ancient Gandhara Civilization as a major learning center. Most Venerable Anil Sakiya emphasized the deep connection Buddhist communities feel with Pakistan and urged for concrete steps to preserve the nation’s ancient civilization. Federal Minister Khichi affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to conserving its Buddhist heritage, involving monks and experts in the preservation efforts, and suggested housing artifacts in the Islamabad Museum.
The Thai delegation recognized Pakistan’s potential for religious tourism, particularly Buddhist tourism, due to its rich heritage. The meeting also explored the idea of establishing a Buddhist Civilization Centre in Islamabad and promoting “Gandhara Diplomacy” to exhibit artifacts in Buddhist-majority countries. Secretary National Heritage and Culture Division, Mr. Asad Rehman Gilani, noted that only a fraction of Pakistan’s heritage has been excavated, with further work contingent on adequate preservation facilities.
The session concluded with a commitment to safeguard Pakistan’s Buddhist legacy and promote cultural ties internationally.
