Islamabad: The Federal Cabinet has approved Pakistan’s first National Vaccine Policy, marking a significant step in the country’s health sector. The policy, spearheaded by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan and facilitated by the Special Investment Facilitation Council, aims to establish a more resilient and self-reliant vaccine ecosystem.
According to Press Information Department, the policy provides a structured approach for vaccine development, regulation, and promotion in Pakistan. It seeks to minimize dependence on imports by enhancing domestic manufacturing through specific incentives, streamlined regulatory processes, and a favorable investment climate.
A major aspect of the policy is the encouragement of local vaccine production via public-private partnerships and technology transfer. This initiative is designed to boost production capacity, ensure consistent supply, and improve affordability and access, especially during public health emergencies.
The policy also stresses the importance of strengthening regulatory capacities to meet global standards as set by the World Health Organization. This alignment is expected to support quality assurance, enhance the international credibility of vaccines produced in Pakistan, and open opportunities for entry into global markets.
Furthermore, the policy advocates for increased research and development, workforce capacity building, and collaboration between academia, industry, and international partners. The continued support from the Special Investment Facilitation Council in removing obstacles and facilitating strategic initiatives is anticipated to expedite progress across the vaccine supply chain.
The approval of the National Vaccine Policy underlines the government’s dedication to bolstering healthcare resilience, ensuring long-term sustainability, and positioning Pakistan as a competitive participant in the global vaccine and biopharmaceutical industry.
