Islamabad: Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, engaged in a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan to discuss bilateral relations, energy sector collaboration, and investment opportunities. The discussions also included appreciation from the Canadian side for Pakistan’s role in mediating U.S.-Iran tensions.
According to Ministry of Energy, the Canadian High Commissioner praised Pakistan’s efforts in promoting a ceasefire and expressed hopes for continued support in future dialogues. The Federal Minister encouraged Canada to actively engage in fostering regional dialogue and peace. In energy matters, the Minister highlighted that Pakistan sourced around 55% of its energy mix from clean sources last year, underscoring a government policy shift towards sustainability. Plans are underway to transition from imported to local coal, pending environmental studies. Battery Energy Storage Systems and solar panel waste management are being prioritized, with private sector investment encouraged.
The Canadian High Commissioner acknowledged these initiatives, noting the importance of battery disposal planning with increased electric vehicle usage. Discussions also covered a Time-of-Use tariff to promote efficient electricity use and reduce industrial costs. Investment prospects were considered, with the Canadian firm JCM showing interest in Pakistan’s energy sector. The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue technical discussions and highlighted an upcoming Global Energy Show in Canada as a platform for further collaboration.
