Pakistan and Canada Discuss Agricultural and Livestock Cooperation

Islamabad: In a recent meeting, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr. Tarik Ali Khan, explored ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in agriculture and livestock development. The discussions focused on potential collaborations in agri-business investment and trade, aiming to boost food security, agricultural modernization, and economic growth.

According to Press Information Department, the Federal Minister acknowledged Canada’s expertise in sustainable agriculture and expressed Pakistan’s interest in benefiting from Canadian advancements in canola cultivation, mechanized farming, and agricultural research. Pakistan, which spends billions on edible oil imports, seeks to reduce its import dependence through enhanced domestic production.

The meeting also highlighted Pakistan’s potential as an exporter of agricultural products like mangoes, rice, and halal meat, and the need for improved market access and trade opportunities. Joint initiatives in hybrid seed research, livestock improvement, and agricultural value chains were proposed, alongside Canadian support for capacity building and compliance with international standards.

Mr. Tarik Ali Khan reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to strengthening ties with Pakistan, noting ongoing efforts to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan’s agricultural sectors. He announced the upcoming visit of Canada’s Minister of Agriculture to Pakistan, intended to deepen bilateral engagement and explore new cooperation avenues.

Both sides agreed that increased collaboration would significantly enhance bilateral relations and economic opportunities. The meeting concluded with a proposal to establish a Joint Working Group for continued technical cooperation and trade facilitation.
