Pakistan Advocates for Backing Developing Nations in Confronting Food Security Challenges

Islamabad, 12 Oct 2023:In a pronounced stance at the United Nations, Pakistan has vehemently called for bolstered support towards developing countries, spotlighting the urgent need to address the overarching challenges of socio-economic instability, food insecurity, and the global climate change crisis. Counsellor Hafiza Humaira Javaid articulated the call while delivering a statement at the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly on the Eradication of Poverty and Agriculture Development, Food Security and Nutrition, in New York, according to a press release from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MOIB).

Javaid stressed that the global community must act with expedience to eradicate poverty, mitigate hunger and food insecurity, resolve geopolitical conflicts, and counteract the climate crisis, identifying these as significant obstacles in the universal pursuit of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She underscored these elements not merely as stand-alone issues but as intertwined challenges that reciprocally amplify the difficulties faced by developing nations.

Further amplifying Pakistan’s viewpoint, the Counsellor proposed the resolution of the debt crisis and the assurance of equitable financial structures. This, she suggested, could be achieved by implementing reforms within international financial institutions to aid impoverished and developing countries in navigating their respective socio-economic and climate change-induced challenges.

Javaid asserted that the exploitation of the natural resources of less affluent countries must cease. She further appealed to developed countries to honour their commitments by providing critical support in the realms of finance, technology, and capacity building to aid developing countries in recuperating from various crises and the far-reaching impacts of climate change.

Highlighting the agriculture sector, the Counsellor advocated for reforms and investment, especially to facilitate farmers in developing countries by ensuring adequate access to essential agricultural inputs such as seeds and fertilizer, as well as financial resources. Through such avenues of support and global cooperation, the aim is to strategically fortify developing nations in their battle against poverty, food insecurity, and climate change, thereby fostering a more stable and sustainable global environment.
