Islamabad: Over two million smart electricity meters have been installed across the country, the Senate was informed today, as part of efforts to reduce electricity theft and address technical issues. The installation of these meters has also contributed to increasing the recovery rates of power distribution companies.

According to Radio Pakistan, during the Senate’s Question Hour, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry addressed inquiries regarding the smart meters’ impact on electricity management. Meanwhile, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik reported significant production levels, with 72,126 million cubic feet of gas and 6.73 million barrels of oil produced from fields in Lakki Marwat and Karak over the last three years.

In response to a Calling Attention Notice, Minister for National Health Services Syed Mustafa Kamal outlined government initiatives to address medicine pricing and availability. A Cabinet Committee, comprising six ministers, has been established to oversee these issues, while an expedited registration process for medical devices has been introduced.

Furthermore, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan assured the Senate that the government is adhering to the Supreme Court’s directives concerning the medical treatment of the PTI’s founding chairman, who has been declared healthy by a panel of doctors. The government remains committed to implementing any future court orders regarding his health care.

Additionally, Minister Kamal highlighted the operational status of two CT angiography machines at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, emphasizing that patient referrals for scans are based strictly on medical necessity.

The Senate session concluded with an announcement that the House will reconvene on Friday at 10:30 in the morning.
