ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB) has released an annual report detailing significant strides in the nation’s media landscape over the past year. The report highlights the launch of an AI-enabled monitoring system and the establishment of a new Digital Communication Department aimed at tackling digital threats.
The introduction of the AI-powered monitoring system by the Directorate of Electronic Media and Publications marks a noteworthy advancement. This move aligns with the government’s strategy to employ technology in media analysis and bolster national security measures.
A pivotal development in the past year is the creation of the Digital Communication Department, approved in October 2024. This new entity is tasked with addressing digital misinformation and hybrid warfare using state-of-the-art data analytics and real-time monitoring tools.
The Press Information Department’s efforts centered on an integrated communication strategy that aligns with government objectives and national stability. Key initiatives included forming a Meta-Narrative Committee to counter misinformation and promoting the Revised National Action Plan. The department supported over 4,500 journalists, issued more than 7,600 press releases, and conducted over 600 press conferences.
The Directorate of Electronic Media and Publications has been active in media monitoring and content production under the country’s Film and Broadcast Policy. It has produced documentaries aligned with government narratives and launched an AI-enabled system for media analytics, while also fostering co-productions and tracking public sector advertisements.
Pakistan Television (PTV) has focused on promoting inclusivity and cultural heritage through diverse programming. Highlights from the past year include popular dramas and coverage of key national events. PTV News and PTV World have upgraded their services, including the introduction of sign language bulletins, and secured international media cooperation agreements.
The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation is undergoing a revival aimed at financial sustainability and content enhancement. Plans include generating significant revenue through various channels and improving engagement through digital platforms.
The Associated Press of Pakistan has expanded its coverage and partnerships, providing multilingual content on global events and key national issues. It has also increased its digital outreach and internship opportunities.
PEMRA, the media regulatory authority, has focused on expanding its monitoring capabilities and strengthening its regulatory framework to support media diversity and quality.
Other departments, including the Press Council of Pakistan and the Information Service Academy, have continued their efforts to uphold media ethics and train media professionals. The year also saw initiatives in cultural diplomacy and tourism promotion by the EP wing.
Overall, the MoIB’s report underscores a year of technological advancements and strategic initiatives aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s media landscape and enhancing its global image.
