Mayor Karachi Launches Investigation into Land Title Near Hill Park

KARACHI: In a move aimed at safeguarding public assets and preserving Karachi’s recreational spaces, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has begun a formal process to verify the title, ownership, and legal status of a plot claimed to be adjacent to Hill Park in Block-6, P.E.C.H.S.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the Mayor has reached out to the Federal Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Works, for an urgent and comprehensive verification of Plot No. 39-G-4, Block-6, P.E.C.H.S., Karachi. This action underscores KMC’s commitment to transparency and legality, aiming to protect public assets from unauthorized encroachment or irregular land transactions.

Preliminary scrutiny by KMC reveals that the plot is claimed to measure approximately 500 square yards. However, the original 1959 approved master plan of P.E.C.H.S. does not list Plot No. 39-G-4. Additionally, the approved records suggest that only a small residual parcel of land, about 200 square yards, could exist at the location.

These findings have raised questions regarding the legal basis for a separate plot measuring 500 square yards appearing in some records. There is concern that land intended for public use or park facilities may have been altered, merged, or incorrectly documented in private title records.

To clarify the situation, Mayor Wahab has requested the Ministry of Housing and Works to provide complete records related to the plot, including title documents, allotment orders, lease deeds, conveyance records, and more. The Mayor seeks clarification on the legal grounds for the 500 square yards designation and whether any designated land for Hill Park or public amenities has been encroached upon.

Mayor Wahab emphasized that public lands and recreational spaces are a trust for Karachi’s citizens, requiring protection through strict adherence to laws and regulations. He stated that any ambiguity regarding land ownership or use adjoining public facilities must be investigated thoroughly.

The verification exercise aims to ensure transparency and accountability in land administration while protecting public property from illegal encroachments. Mayor Wahab affirmed that KMC will continue to take necessary legal and administrative measures to preserve municipal assets and protect the rights of Karachi’s residents.
