Peshawar, In observance of World Diabetes Day, Khyber Teaching Hospital in Peshawar organized a free diabetes camp to spread awareness and provide preventive measures for diabetes. The event aimed to educate the public on early diabetes detection, particularly in children, and offer free medical consultations and treatments.
According to Directorate General Information and PRs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the camp was led by Dr. Sabahat Ameer, Dr. Shazia Behar, and Dr. Sulaiman Elahi Malik from the Khyber Teaching Hospital. Participants received medical examinations, medicines, and educational materials on diabetes prevention and management.
Dr. Sabahat Ameer emphasized the importance of recognizing early symptoms of diabetes in children, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and fatigue. He also highlighted that since 2009, Khyber Teaching Hospital has been providing free diabetes treatment for children in the province. Dr. Sulaiman Elahi Malik shared alarming statistics from the World Diabetes Organization (IDF) 2021 survey, revealing that about 33 million people in Pakistan, or 26% of the population, have diabetes. He advised the public to balance their diets, consume more vegetables and fruits, reduce sugar intake, and engage in daily exercise. For those with diabetes, he emphasized the importance of adhering to prescribed medication and diet.
This event marks Khyber Teaching Hospital’s ongoing commitment to combating diabetes and promoting public health education in the region.
