Srinagar, 13 Oct 2023: In light of the continuous power disturbances in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has called for the formation of a fact-finding committee to scrutinize the root causes behind the persistent issue. The demand, underscored by KCCI President Javaid Tenga, hinges upon the unfulfilled assurances from authorities regarding the stabilization of the power situation, which continues to adversely affect businesses, industries, and the daily lives of citizens, according to the Kashmir Media Service (KMS).
Tenga articulated that despite the authorities’ commitments to secure additional power from external resources, the ground realities reflect no enhancement in the existing situation, thereby not only stalling business and industrial operations but also impinging upon people’s everyday lives. The KCCI, which has been vigilantly observing the capricious electric power supply scenario in the valley for several weeks, notes the significant detrimental effects that the inconsistency is rendering upon trade, businesses, and residential households.
Emphasizing the potential hardships, especially during the forthcoming cold winter months, Tenga pressed for the installation of a fact-finding committee. The committee’s goal would be to pinpoint the critical issues responsible for the consumer predicaments, especially impacting vulnerable demographics like the elderly, ailing individuals, students, and crucial sectors, including health, education, industries, tourism, and industrial estates due to the persistent power outages.
Tenga highlighted his deep concerns and disappointment towards the conflicting policies of the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL). Despite prior promises of an uninterrupted and flawless electric supply following the implementation of smart meters, the actuality has been significantly divergent. The power supply has not only remained erratic throughout the summer, but the Department has also resorted to announcing a scheduled power supply as opposed to ensuring a regular, consistent supply.
This development elucidates a notable discord between assurances and delivery concerning the power supply situation in the region. As the scenario unfolds, the proposed fact-finding committee, if established, is poised to bring to light the underlying issues contributing to the ongoing crisis, paving the way toward potential solutions and strategies to mitigate the impacts on various sectors and communities.
