Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Initiates Nallah Cleaning Drive to Combat Urban Flooding

Karachi: In an effort to bolster Karachi’s readiness for the impending monsoon season, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has commenced an extensive nallah cleaning drive throughout the city’s districts. This initiative aims to facilitate the flow of rainwater, reduce the likelihood of urban flooding, and ensure efficient drainage of stormwater during heavy rains.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the organization is tasked with the maintenance and cleaning of 45 major stormwater drains in Karachi. The operation follows a structured schedule to ensure that all primary drainage channels are cleared of silt, debris, solid waste, and other blockages before the monsoon season begins.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffar and Senior Director Municipal Services, inspected progress at various sites, including the Hijrat Colony Nallah, a significant drainage channel. The Senior Director Municipal Services briefed the mayor on the cleaning operations, work schedule, machinery deployment, and strategies to complete the task before the monsoon rains.

Mayor Wahab instructed the Municipal Services Department to make the cleaning schedule available on KMC’s website and social media, ensuring public awareness of the operation’s progress and covered areas. He emphasized completing the cleaning of major drains ahead of the monsoon to allow smooth rainwater flow and reduce urban flooding risk.

The mayor urged citizens to avoid dumping waste in drains and to dispose of garbage at designated collection points, stressing that the campaign’s success relies on both government efforts and public cooperation. He highlighted the importance of preparedness, stating that KMC teams are working diligently to finish the operation on time and address public concerns promptly.

The KMC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public infrastructure, safeguarding residential and commercial areas from flooding, and delivering efficient municipal services through effective planning and coordinated action.
