UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia Engages with Pakistan’s Human Rights Minister on Global Efforts

Islamabad: In a significant diplomatic engagement, Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, to discuss international strategies against Islamophobia and promote interfaith harmony. The meeting also focused on strengthening cooperation on human rights issues and included the participation of Barrister Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Law and Justice.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Tarar welcomed Mr. Moratinos and congratulated him on his appointment. He praised the United Nations’ initiatives, particularly the establishment of March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia and the adoption of a UN General Assembly Resolution addressing the issue. The Minister regarded these actions as pivotal in tackling religious intolerance on a global scale.

The discussions reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence, underscoring constitutional protections, the National Action Plan on Human Rights, and the operationalization of the National Commission for Minorities’ Rights. Senator Tarar expressed grave concern over the global rise in Islamophobia, citing increased incidents of hate speech, discrimination, and attacks on Muslim communities and places of worship. He emphasized that freedom of expression should not be misused to incite hatred against any religion.

The Minister also highlighted the situation in India, noting the rise of anti-Muslim discrimination and restrictions on religious freedoms. He commended Mr. Moratinos for his involvement in these matters and stressed the importance of ongoing international efforts to protect the rights and dignity of Muslims and other minorities.

The meeting concluded with discussions on potential avenues for enhanced cooperation, such as the proposed UN Plan of Action on Combating Islamophobia, and fostering interfaith dialogue and collaboration to promote tolerance and respect for human rights.
