Karachi Introduces Solar Energy Initiatives to Combat Global Warming

Karachi, In a significant move towards sustainability, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the inauguration of a 100 kW solar plant at Kidney Hill Park, marking a step forward in the city’s commitment to combat global warming and promote green energy. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to establish an endowment fund of 10 crores dedicated to green energy projects and to transition public infrastructure to solar power.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the new solar plant is just the beginning of KMC’s plan to install similar facilities in other parks across the city and explore the feasibility of powering street lights with solar energy. The move is expected to significantly reduce KMC’s electricity bills while also generating additional revenue by selling surplus electricity to K Electric. The project, which received substantial financial support from Pakistan State Oil, underscores KMC’s intention to leverage its assets for sustainable development, including plans to convert over 500 canals, 106 road poles, playgrounds, and 46 parks to solar energy.

Mayor Wahab also highlighted the broader vision of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to provide free electricity to citizens as part of its manifesto, emphasizing the role of clean and green energy in this promise. He pointed out the successful planting of over 250,000 saplings in Kidney Hill Park, transforming the area into a green space that contributes to the city’s environmental health. The mayor’s announcement reflects a commitment to utilizing Karachi’s extensive land holdings for the public good, reversing previous trends of neglect and illegal encroachments.

Furthermore, Mayor Wahab touched upon political dynamics, reiterating PPP’s strong position in the province and its principled stance on coalition politics and governance, highlighting the party’s unwavering support for Prime Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and its dedication to serving the people’s interests above all.
