Islamabad High Court Reviews Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s Case, Looks for Positive Developments

Islamabad, The Islamabad High Court (IHC), led by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaque, heard a constitutional petition filed by Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui regarding the case of her sister, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who is currently imprisoned in the United States. The hearing focused on the ongoing efforts and possible developments in Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case.

According to Central Secretariat, Karachi, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui’s lawyer, Advocate Imran Shafique, briefed the media after the court session. He revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) had provided records of meetings with Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and that her lawyer in the USA, Clive Stafford Smith, is actively working on the case, particularly concerning her imprisonment in Afghanistan.

Advocate Shafique expressed optimism about positive developments in the case, noting that the court was satisfied with the steps taken by the MoFA. He mentioned ongoing efforts to shift Dr. Aafia Siddiqui from her current high-security prison to a standard facility in the United States, citing concerns about her experiencing physical, psychological, and sexual torture at the hands of jail staff. However, he stated that some developments in the process could not be disclosed at the moment.

During the court hearing, there were discussions about the role of Senators and Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui’s security concerns for her forthcoming visit to the US. Clive Stafford Smith, speaking online, noted that the Senators’ visit had not been approved and urged the MoFA to ensure Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui’s safety during her visit, as he would not accompany her this time.

The case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui continues to draw attention and concern, both within Pakistan and internationally, as legal and diplomatic efforts are underway to address her situation.
