Srinagar: Indian police have removed signboards and standees urging tourists to avoid consuming alcohol and drugs in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the Traders Association in Lal Chowk had placed the signboards in front of their shops to encourage tourists to refrain from public consumption of alcohol and drugs. However, police, following directives from the New Delhi-appointed Lieutenant Governor, confiscated the signs merely an hour after they were installed.
Bilal Ahmad, the President of the Traders Association, noted that the initiative was prompted by frequent incidents of tourists drinking alcohol and getting into altercations, particularly with their families. Ahmad emphasized that while tourists are welcomed, they should avoid alcohol to maintain a peaceful environment.
The effort received support from both locals and visitors. Faisal Dar, a local resident, expressed that while tourists are encouraged to enjoy their visit, they should respect local traditions and avoid harmful substances.
Senior leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, criticized the removal of the signs, calling it strange and noted that people have the right to promote ethical behavior. He urged authorities to support initiatives that uphold community values and well-being.
Mirwaiz praised the traders for their efforts to promote respect for local culture and urged others, particularly in the tourism industry, to follow suit to help curb these vices.
