Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced a significant initiative to enhance transparency by providing citizens with direct online access to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) development and land records. This initiative also includes the implementation of a digital payment system aimed at improving the management of Karachi’s administrative and financial affairs.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab, speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation headquarters, emphasized the importance of transparency and citizen access to information. The new sections on the KMC website, kmc.gos.pk, will include details of KMC’s assets, development projects, and land records, allowing citizens to access information that was previously restricted. The digitization of land records, some dating back centuries, aims to preserve these records and reduce human intervention in property transfers.
The initiative includes the integration of KMC employee records into the SAP system to eliminate fraudulent payments and ensure transparency. Every payment from KMC’s accounts will now be recorded electronically, enabling comprehensive tracking of financial transactions. Mayor Wahab highlighted the improvement in revenue collection, with significant increases reported in certain departments.
Development project details, including costs and progress, are now publicly accessible online. The Karachi Development Map provides citizens with detailed information on ongoing projects, including road construction and relevant institutional jurisdictions. For the first time, information on KMC’s assets, such as land and bus terminals, is being made available to the public.
Mayor Wahab underscored the importance of transitioning from claims to factual information regarding development efforts in Karachi. The current administration, led by the Pakistan Peoples Party, has initiated several projects directly benefiting citizens, including the development of expressways and sewage treatment to protect the sea from pollution.
The mayor emphasized that the transparency measures are not aimed at any individual or institution but are intended to establish a system where citizens can easily access information about the city’s resources, projects, and expenditures. This move is part of a broader effort to create a transparent and accountable local government system using modern technology.
