Islamabad: The government of Pakistan has announced plans to seek a review of a Supreme Court decision concerning the treatment of the founding chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the government will file for a review, questioning whether the court’s order on the treatment of the PTI leader should be uniformly applied to all prisoners with health issues.
According to Radio Pakistan, Tarar made these remarks in a video statement following a Supreme Court hearing on the case of the PTI founding chairman. He noted that the government had already reviewed the order and held consultations on various aspects of the decision. The minister raised concerns over the broader implications of the ruling, particularly whether it would extend to other prisoners suffering from health problems.
Tarar emphasized that convicted prisoners traditionally receive medical treatment in government hospitals, hinting at the potential challenges in implementing the Supreme Court’s directive uniformly across the prison system. The government’s move to seek a review highlights ongoing legal debates regarding the treatment of prisoners and the scope of judicial orders in Pakistan.
