Islamabad: Chairman Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has called for international cooperation and peace as essential components in addressing the multifaceted threats posed by climate change. Speaking at the Breathe Pakistan Conference, Gilani emphasized the urgent need for global collaboration to tackle issues impacting food security, water resources, agriculture, and economic stability.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the conference, organized by the Dawn Media Group, brought together a diverse group of attendees, including parliamentarians, diplomats, climate experts, and various stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. Gilani highlighted the tangible effects of climate change, such as rising temperatures and extreme weather events, underscoring the importance of linking climate security with regional peace and stability.
He outlined Pakistan’s efforts to bolster resilience in key sectors like energy and agriculture, while also advocating for fair and timely climate finance. Despite Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, Gilani noted that the country has received limited international funding, deeming current global commitments inadequate. He called for enhanced cooperation in areas such as glacier preservation and water management.
Gilani also mentioned Pakistan’s initiatives, including the Climate Change Act and afforestation projects, and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advocating for climate justice on international platforms. He stressed the need for comprehensive data and effective planning to ensure that climate resilience efforts benefit vulnerable communities, urging stakeholders to turn conference discussions into tangible legislative and policy advancements.
In his concluding remarks, Gilani expressed confidence in Pakistan’s capacity to lead by example in the global fight against climate change.
