Karachi: Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab have initiated a project intended to supply 10 million gallons of water daily from Dumlotte to the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and surrounding areas. The foundation stone was laid at a ceremony held at the Filtration Plant Site on Creek Avenue, DHA Phase VII.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the ceremony was attended by a range of officials, including Member of the National Assembly Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Adviser to the Chief Minister Sindh Najmi Alam, and Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, along with representatives from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC), the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and the Cantonment Board.
The Sindh Local Government Minister emphasized that the project aligns with the development vision of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He expressed confidence that FWO would complete the project ahead of schedule, noting that the Sindh government has allocated the necessary funds. He highlighted ongoing developments on approximately 150 roads in Karachi and announced new projects at Khayaban-e-Ittehad and Khayaban-e-Shahbaz to enhance transportation.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab detailed the project’s scope, including a dedicated pipeline to transport water from Dumlotte to DHA. The Rs14 billion project is expected to be completed within 12 months and aims to benefit millions in DHA and adjoining areas. The mayor acknowledged past commitments that fell short and credited current efforts to realize the project.
The project involves collaboration between the Sindh government, Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, and FWO, focusing on creating a modern transmission system. Additional projects for DHA, such as flyovers on Khayaban-e-Shahbaz and Khaliq-uz-Zaman Road, and an extension of Shahrah-e-Bhutto, are also underway. The mayor also addressed sewage treatment improvements, stating that Karachi currently treats 35 million gallons daily, with a goal of 100 million gallons by January 2027.
The Dumlotte-to-DHA water supply project is seen as a critical initiative in resolving water supply issues, with timely completion expected to enhance water availability for DHA and adjacent areas.
