Islamabad: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar visited the National Forensics Agency (NFA) to review its forensic capabilities. During the visit, Director General Jawad Ahmed Dogar and other officials provided a comprehensive briefing on the agency’s departments, laboratories, and investigative procedures.

According to Press Information Department, the NFA, established on December 24, 2024, under the National Forensics Agency Act, serves as the central federal forensic institution for Pakistan. It provides scientific forensic services to law enforcement agencies, prosecution departments, and courts. The agency currently operates 11 forensic laboratories, including a Digital Forensics Lab that has processed 3,090 digital devices and completed 2,158 out of 2,506 cases. The Chemical and Biological Forensic Laboratories have completed 1,044 out of 1,525 cases.

The briefing highlighted the establishment of Centres of Excellence in Digital Forensics and Explosive Forensics at the NFA. The Explosive Forensics Centre also manages the National Bomb Exploitation and Investigation System. Senator Tarar commended the NFA team for their work in operationalizing the agency swiftly.

During his visit, Senator Tarar noted that modern technology has transformed criminal investigations, with advanced forensic capabilities playing a key role in prosecution and securing convictions. He emphasized the significant role of forensic science in counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in tracing explosive materials and weapons used in criminal activities.

Senator Tarar stated that the NFA is envisioned to become a Centre of Excellence for forensic science in Pakistan, offering support to other laboratories and government institutions. He highlighted the challenges posed by the digital era, such as online fraud and cybercrime, stressing the need for ongoing training for investigators, prosecutors, and forensic experts.

Additionally, Senator Tarar mentioned plans for legislative measures to address legal gaps and improve coordination among forensic services, investigation, and prosecution through Memoranda of Understanding with relevant bodies.
