Former Ambassador Urges U.S. and Iran to Return to Diplomacy Amid Rising Tensions

Islamabad: Former Ambassador Sardar Masood Khan has called on the United States and Iran to re-engage in diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing the potential risks to regional stability and the global economy.

According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan expressed concern over the recent escalation in hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, following an exchange of strikes. He highlighted the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding previously negotiated between the two countries, noting it was the result of intensive diplomacy. Despite recent setbacks, he remains hopeful that the diplomatic framework has not been entirely abandoned, allowing for potential renewed dialogue.

Sardar Masood Khan pointed out ongoing disagreements between Tehran and Washington regarding the Memorandum, specifically about sanctions relief and frozen assets. He stressed that inflammatory language from both sides has increased mistrust, complicating efforts to resume negotiations. He called for Pakistan to play a mediatory role, given its established trust with both nations, to help bridge differences and prevent further escalation.

He also noted the limited involvement of the international community and the ineffectiveness of multilateral institutions in the crisis. He suggested that Pakistan, potentially supported by countries like Qatar, could lead regional diplomatic efforts to restore stability. Addressing developments in Gaza, he mentioned Hamas’ decision to step back from administration, viewing it as a positive step towards peace, but warned that unresolved political issues and military actions could undermine diplomatic progress.

Sardar Masood Khan highlighted global consequences of the conflict, including rising oil prices and market instability, and warned of potential adverse effects on global trade and economic growth. He concluded by urging stakeholders to maintain communication channels, prevent further escalation, and build on existing diplomatic efforts, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability.
