Female Enrollment in Punjab’s High Schools Increases Tenfold Over Five Decades

Lahore: The education system in Punjab has witnessed a significant transformation over the last fifty years, with female high school enrollment increasing more than tenfold, according to recent data. The number of female students enrolled in high schools rose from 204,000 in the 1971-72 academic year to 2.29 million by 2020-21, reflecting a substantial shift in educational access and participation for girls.

According to Gallup Pakistan’s Big Data series, spearheaded by Executive Director Bilal I. Gilani, the dramatic rise in female enrollment is part of a broader trend of expansion and development within Punjab’s education sector. The analysis draws on long-term statistics from the Punjab Development Statistics series, covering the period from 1971-72 to 2020-21, and highlights significant growth across secondary schools, higher education institutions, and technical and vocational education.

While primary schools in Punjab saw a modest increase from 27,241 to 31,995 institutions, secondary education experienced rapid growth. Middle schools nearly tripled in number, and high schools expanded more than sixfold. This expansion in secondary education is seen as a response to growing demand and reflects an increasing trend of students pursuing extended educational pathways.

Female participation in education has been one of the most transformative changes within the system. Alongside high school enrollment, female students in middle schools rose from 177,000 in 1971-72 to over 1 million by 2020-21, and primary school enrollment for girls increased from 617,000 to approximately 1.73 million during the same period.

Higher education institutions also witnessed substantial growth, with degree colleges increasing from 99 to 790, and enrollment rising from 87,000 to 572,000 students. This expansion underscores the rising demand for advanced education and the importance of tertiary qualifications in the evolving labor market.

While Punjab’s population increased by 193% over the past five decades, the expansion of several education indicators, particularly high schools, higher education institutions, and female secondary enrollment, grew at a much faster rate, indicating significant structural changes in the province’s education system.
