Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, and Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, convened at the Ministry of Energy in Islamabad to discuss ongoing reforms in the power sector, alongside evaluating the performance of power distribution companies and the broader political scenario in the country.
According to Press Information Department, the Federal Minister briefed the Governor on comprehensive measures undertaken by the Government over the past two years to bolster the energy sector. These efforts have reportedly led to improved performance of power distribution companies, a decline in line losses and financial deficits, and a reduction in circular debt by PKR 780 billion. The Government is shifting towards a competitive electricity market, facilitating direct electricity trading between businesses, and has initiated the privatization of three power distribution companies as part of its broader privatization program.
The Minister also discussed ongoing initiatives to enhance the transmission system, emphasizing the digitization of the national grid, increased transmission capacity, the promotion of Battery Energy Storage Systems, and the expansion of Advanced Metering Infrastructure. Approximately 16 million electricity meters nationwide are being transitioned to a digital system. Additionally, transformer-level load management under APMS is being introduced to minimize feeder and grid shutdowns, aiming to ensure a reliable electricity supply.
Governor Kundi expressed appreciation for the Government’s reform efforts and conveyed confidence that these initiatives would yield benefits for the public and contribute positively to the national economy. The meeting concluded with both leaders stressing the importance of cooperation between the Federation and provinces for national development and economic stability.
