Islamabad: A three-member delegation of exporters met with Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry to discuss the impact of altered shipping routes on transportation costs and delivery times to European and U.S. markets. The exporters highlighted the challenges posed by longer routes, which they said have increased costs and delivery times, putting them at a disadvantage compared to regional competitors.
According to Press Information Department, the delegation included Shahzad Asghar Ali, CEO of Style Textile; Benedikt Birner, vice president Global Adidas; and Saqib Rafique, senior director, Sourcing Operations at Adidas. Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) CEO Syed Jarar Haider Kazmi participated in the meeting online.
The exporters emphasized that these route changes have made it more difficult for Pakistani exporters to compete effectively in global markets. In response, Junaid Chaudhry suggested that the PNSC could lease or purchase a container vessel to support exporters, contingent on the assurance of sufficient cargo volumes to ensure commercial viability.
To explore this possibility, a working group was formed, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, PNSC, and exporters. This group will assess the feasibility of the proposal and consider other measures aimed at reducing transportation costs and enhancing export connectivity. The delegation committed to consulting with other exporters and presenting their findings to the working group for further consideration.
