Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research has recommended setting the minimum support price for wheat at Rs. 5,000 per 40 kg or higher, while also advocating for a consistent subsidy mechanism for farmers nationwide. Chaired by Syed Tariq Hussain, MNA, the committee emphasized the urgency of finalizing the National Wheat Policy 2026-2030 before the wheat sowing season begins.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, during its 31st meeting held at Parliament House, the committee expressed concerns about various challenges in the agricultural sector, including escalating input costs, inadequate mechanization, poor-quality seeds, and insufficient storage facilities. The Minister for National Food Security and Research briefed the committee on the interim wheat policy of the previous year and the proposed National Wheat Policy 2026-2030, highlighting the need for consultations with provincial governments to finalize the policy promptly.

It called for a straightforward mechanism accessible to farmers across the country. Additionally, members raised issues regarding the availability of storage and marketing facilities following the closure of PASSCO, along with concerns about the high costs of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs.
