NEW YORK: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar of Pakistan has reiterated his country’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people and their pursuit of self-determination and statehood during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York. The discussion also covered regional developments, with a focus on the Middle East and South Asia.
According to Radio Pakistan, Deputy Prime Minister Dar praised Secretary-General Guterres for his advocacy of a two-state solution and efforts towards the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan, as endorsed by Security Council Resolution 2803. Both leaders exchanged views on recent developments, including Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the Middle East, which have facilitated a lasting ceasefire.
The meeting also addressed concerns in South Asia, with Dar expressing apprehension over statements by Indian leadership and actions concerning the Indus Waters Treaty, which he described as a violation of international law. He emphasized the importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute for regional peace.
Additionally, Dar highlighted the significance of a stable Afghanistan for the region and expressed concerns over terrorist activities originating from Afghan soil. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to national security in alignment with international law and the UN Charter.
The Deputy Prime Minister also welcomed the UN80 Initiative and emphasized the importance of reforming the Security Council to reflect the interests of developing countries, calling for a process grounded in sovereign equality and inclusivity. Secretary-General Guterres commended Pakistan for its contributions to international peace and security through diplomacy and peacekeeping efforts.
