Congress Leader Accuses Modi Government of Waging War Against Indian Farmers

Jammu, The President of the Jammu and Kashmir chapter of the Indian National Congress, Vikar Rasool Wani, has come out in strong support of the Indian farmers currently protesting, citing grave concerns over the brutal methods employed by the government to thwart their march to Delhi. This escalation of hostilities against the farming community highlights a deepening crisis in the country’s agricultural sector.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a press conference at the party’s office in Jammu, alongside other senior leaders, Wani detailed the severe measures, including the use of teargas via drones by the BJP-led Haryana state police, aimed at dispersing the farmers’ peaceful march. The actions were described as indicative of the government’s adversarial stance towards the farmers, raising questions about the necessity of such forceful interventions.

Wani criticized the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not fulfilling promises made to the farmers, notably the assurance of a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the pledge to double farmers’ incomes by 2022. He pointed out the stark reality that farmers’ incomes have instead diminished, with an increase in suicide rates among the agricultural community during Modi’s tenure.

The Congress leader’s statement underscores a broader critique of the Modi administration’s policies concerning not only the agricultural sector but also the treatment of Jammu and Kashmir. Wani affirmed the J and K Congress’s commitment to opposing the central government’s policies and advocating for the restoration of democratic rights in the region.

This confrontation between the Indian government and its agricultural sector is set against a backdrop of ongoing protests and demands for systemic reforms. The situation reflects the growing discontent among India’s farmers, who are essential to the nation’s economy, and signals a critical need for dialogue and resolution to avert further distress in the community.
