NEW YORK: China and Pakistan co-hosted an Arria-Formula meeting of the United Nations Security Council, focusing on “Bridging the Implementation Gap: Security Council Resolutions and the Maintenance of International Peace and Security.” The meeting aimed to explore ways to ensure comprehensive implementation of Security Council resolutions.
According to Radio Pakistan, the discussion served as a platform for Member States to deliberate on how the Council can achieve effective and non-selective adherence to its mandates. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized that Security Council resolutions are binding obligations under the UN Charter. He noted that selective or delayed implementation undermines the Council’s authority and prolongs unresolved conflicts, such as those in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
Ambassador Ahmad highlighted the unresolved status of Jammu and Kashmir, attributing it to the non-implementation of relevant resolutions. He warned of the serious implications for international peace and security and the ongoing human suffering experienced by the Kashmiri people. The joint effort by China and Pakistan to convene this discussion underscored their commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter.
