United Nations Delegation Visits NDMA Headquarters to Discuss Disaster Management Strategies


Islamabad: A delegation from the United Nations, led by Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, visited the National Emergencies Operations Centre at the NDMA Headquarters in Islamabad. The team included Mohamed Yahya, UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, along with senior officials from UNOCHA and other UN representatives.



According to Press Information Department, the NDMA team provided an in-depth presentation on the National Emergencies Operations Centre’s capabilities and Pakistan’s proactive disaster management systems aimed at reducing recurring disaster risks. Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, Chairman of NDMA, introduced various measures for regional integration and a global disaster risk reduction approach. The delegation reviewed Pakistan NDMA’s recent achievements and plans to leverage next-generation technologies for improved disaster early warnings and coordinated responses.



The NDMA’s coordination with national leadership and its framework for regional governments were highlighted, along with its connections with global academia and humanitarian organizations. The presentation emphasized the benefits of multi-tiered coordination and readiness for disaster response, focusing on localized risk communication and anticipatory actions, as well as international collaboration for disaster relief logistics.



The session included a demonstration of “Disaster Lens 2026” and showcased Comprehensive International Simulation Exercises to the delegates. The United Nations delegation praised Pakistan’s innovative disaster management methods and expressed a strong interest in continued collaboration. Both parties highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional linkages and cooperation to address emerging risks from climate change and complex disasters.
