Sindh Government Allocates Rs800 Million for Assistive Devices to Aid Persons with Disabilities

KARACHI: The Sindh government has allocated Rs800 million to 105 partner organizations and NGOs to provide assistive devices to persons with disabilities, a move described by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah as crucial for the empowerment and inclusion of vulnerable groups in society.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, the funds were distributed during a ceremony organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) at CM House. The initiative aims to supply wheelchairs, hearing aids, prosthetics, and other assistive devices to improve the quality of life for disabled individuals. The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and expanding DEPD services, including enhancing employment opportunities and improving access to education and rehabilitation services.

Murad Shah also highlighted plans for a comprehensive disability census to improve planning and service delivery. The DEPD, operating through government and partner centers, has shown significant progress in special education enrollment, though challenges remain with waiting lists. New initiatives include digital classrooms, skill development programs, and the expansion of autism and rehabilitation facilities, underpinned by a Rs1 billion endowment fund.

The government is also advancing the “Inclusive City” project, allocating land for developing an accessible urban environment. The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and the distribution of assistive devices, underscoring the government’s dedication to creating equal opportunities for all citizens.
