Sindh Chief Minister Celebrates 75 Years of Pakistan-Dutch Relations

Karachi, Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (R) Maqbool Baqar has highlighted the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Pakistan and the Netherlands, marking 75 years of diplomatic ties at a reception hosted by Dutch Ambassador Henny de Vries at Mohatta Palace.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, Justice Baqar reflected on significant moments in sports history that have bonded the two nations, such as the Dutch cricket team’s victory over South Africa in the 2022 World Cup, which enabled Pakistan to reach the semi-finals. He also reminisced about Pakistan’s triumph over the Netherlands in the 1994 Hockey World Cup on penalties. Baqar humorously noted that Dutch players Tom Cooper and Brandon Glover became household names in Pakistan overnight and expressed gratitude for their unintended assistance in Pakistan’s cricket success.

In his address, the Chief Minister underscored the Netherlands’ role as a key partner in sustainable trade and investment, particularly in the dairy and poultry sectors. He emphasized the benefits Pakistan has gained from Dutch expertise in ports and shipping, including advanced chemical storage terminals, dredging equipment, and tugging solutions for large vessels.

Baqar acknowledged the largest Dutch trade delegation visit to Pakistan for TEXPO 2023, expressing hope for increasing engagement. He pointed out the opportunities for Pakistan to learn from the Netherlands’ leadership in floriculture and value-added produce.

The Chief Minister highlighted the growing appeal of the Netherlands as an educational destination for Pakistani students, thanks to its impressive education system and high English proficiency. He also remembered the contributions of a Dutch nun in establishing Dar ul Sakoon, a school for orphaned handicapped children, in the 1960s.

Recalling historical ties, Baqar mentioned the Royal Dutch Airline’s operation of the Midway House hotel near Karachi airport, a testament to Karachi’s strategic location. He noted that Pakistan’s status as a GSP plus nation has led to over $1 billion in exports to the Netherlands, emphasizing the growing strength of the ‘Made in Pakistan’ brand.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude for the Dutch team of water experts who consulted on better water management practices in 2022. He also highlighted Pakistan’s potential for collaboration in dairy production and investment opportunities in consumer goods, given its large population and growing middle class.

Baqar stressed the potential for Pakistan to benefit from Dutch technology in wind and solar energy, aiming to increase renewable energy share to 35% for substantial savings. He also touched upon shared values of freedom of expression, independence of the judiciary, and equal rights for all religious beliefs between the two nations.

The Chief Minister lauded the role of the Clingendael Academy in educating Pakistani diplomats and called for expanded cooperation in technology, economic reforms, and agriculture. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and security, including facilitating the safe passage of Dutch citizens from regional conflicts.

In conclusion, Baqar praised the Netherlands for its leadership in sustainable and green initiatives, citing Dutch assistance in creating strategies to mitigate flood destruction and the contribution of Dutch companies in transforming Karachi’s waste management through waste-to-energy plants.
