Islamabad, The Senate Standing Committee on Industry and Production, chaired by Senator Khalida Ateeb, met at the Parliament Lodges to review various issues concerning Pakistan’s industrial sector.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the committee received updates on Pakistan Steel Mill, National Fertilizer Corporation, and Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Center. A 25% increase in temporary relief allowance for Pakistan Steel Mill employees was highlighted, with concerns raised about the alarming surge in theft incidents causing financial losses.
The committee discussed the correlation between a reduced workforce and increased theft incidents at Pakistan Steel Mill. The CFO attributed the rise in thefts to a decreased workforce, leading to security vulnerabilities.
The prolonged vacancy of the CEO position at Pakistan Steel Mill was also a topic of concern, with the committee emphasizing the need for a swift appointment in line with regulations.
The committee intended to call the caretaker Minister for Industry and Production and the Secretary for a subsequent meeting to address these issues. The discussion on Pakistan Steel Mill-related matters was adjourned for two weeks, mandating a comprehensive briefing on theft prevention, employee welfare, asset protection, and immediate plans.
The meeting also addressed financial matters involving outstanding payments by National Fertilizers Marketing Limited and Utility Stores Corporation of Pakistan to Trading Corporation of Pakistan.
The issue of contract employees at National Fertilizer Marketing Limited was discussed, with proposals to increase salaries and consider regularization. The committee recommended relieving excess employees to align with operational requirements.
The meeting concluded with directives for proactive involvement and readiness to address the challenges plaguing Pakistan Steel Mill and ensuring timely payments and prudent human resource management within key institutions.
