Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas convened at Old PIPS Hall, Parliament Lodges, chaired by Senator Niaz Ahmed, to review progress on infrastructure, telecommunications, and energy projects in underdeveloped regions such as Chitral and Shangla. The committee expressed dissatisfaction with delays in these projects and directed immediate action to improve digital connectivity and infrastructure.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the committee received a detailed briefing on flood control measures and a 5-megawatt hydropower project in District Chitral, executed under the Public Sector Development Programme. Senator Talha Mehmood emphasized the need for stable internet services in Upper Chitral, highlighting the hardships faced by students and IT professionals. Assurances were given by the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and the CEO of the Universal Service Fund (USF) to improve service delivery. Additionally, the committee directed the Chairperson of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) to submit audit and verification reports related to implementing partners.
The strategic Khawazakhela-Besham Expressway, crucial to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, was also discussed. The committee questioned delays in the project, attributed to high costs and realignment, and emphasized the need for accelerated completion. Technical briefings revealed that while 142 towers have been installed in Chitral, connectivity issues remain. On the energy front, the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) outlined ongoing electricity development initiatives. The committee demanded transparency regarding USF fund deposits and interest rates.
In closing, the committee expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of several Federal Secretaries, resulting in the deferral of multiple agenda items. The Chairman directed that federal secretaries and heads of departments ensure their presence at the next meeting. Senators Jan Muhammad, Syed Kazim Ali Shah, Muhammad Aslam Abro, Danesh Kumar, and Falak Naz, along with senior officials from relevant ministries, attended the meeting.
