LAHORE: The Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) has initiated a tree plantation drive across cemeteries in its jurisdiction, focusing on shade-providing and locally adapted tree species. This initiative aims to enhance greenery and create more environmentally sustainable burial grounds.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the plan was set in motion following a meeting where Director General Ahmad Usman Javaid instructed district managing directors to identify suitable sites for tree planting in cemeteries. Emphasis will be placed on native, evergreen, and dense tree species that can offer shade and thrive in the local climate, including varieties like pilkan, terminalia, and gab.

Mr. Javaid highlighted the importance of selecting tree species whose roots would not disturb graves, with a preference for deep-rooted varieties planted at appropriate sites. The selection also considers species that require minimal water, ensuring the sustainability and ease of maintaining the plantation drive.

In cases where space between graves is limited, the authority plans to plant small flowering plants instead. The initiative is part of the PHA’s annual monsoon plantation drives, leveraging seasonal rainfall to support sapling growth. Native species are prioritized for their ability to absorb pollutants effectively, with dense conifers like pines serving as biological filters.

Additionally, district agencies have implemented anti-smog measures, such as regular watering of trees and green belts, to reduce dust and airborne particulate matter across Punjab’s cities.
