Pakistan’s National Library Faces Urgent Calls for Revitalization Amid Cultural Preservation Efforts

Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Heritage & Culture Division has raised concerns over the state of the National Library of Pakistan and urged immediate action to enhance its facilities and management. Chaired by Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, the Committee called for the Ministry to implement urgent measures to address the library’s declining conditions and to bolster the promotion of Pakistan’s cultural heritage.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the Committee underscored the importance of revitalizing Pakistan’s cultural institutions and accelerating the digitization of the nation’s literary heritage. The focus was particularly on highlighting the cultural traditions of South Punjab and the Saraiki region. While the Committee noted progress in updating legislative frameworks, it expressed dissatisfaction with the library’s maintenance, including issues with hygiene, internet connectivity, and infrastructure.

The Committee requested a detailed report on various operational aspects of the library for its next meeting, stressing the importance of addressing current deficiencies. Additionally, it recognized the library’s efforts in preserving literary heritage and called for expedited digitization of rare publications to enhance public access.

Discussions also included the representation of Saraiki and South Punjab culture at the National Heritage Museum, with recommendations for more exhibitions and collaborations to support artisans and craftsmen. The Committee praised the efforts of the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) and emphasized the need to expand cultural opportunities for emerging artists.

The meeting, attended by several Members of the National Assembly and senior officers, concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to safeguarding Pakistan’s cultural and literary heritage through institutional reforms and effective governance.
