Pakistan’s Health Committee Outlines Major Reforms

Islamabad: The Standing Committee of the National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSR and C) convened in Islamabad, marking a significant step towards reforming Pakistan’s healthcare system. Under the leadership of Dr. Mahesh Kumar Malani, MNA, the meeting underscored the government’s dedication to strengthening health regulations and addressing key public health challenges.

According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, the committee’s agenda included reviewing and potentially amending several critical health bills. These include the Pakistan Nursing Council (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aimed at reforming legislative frameworks and ensuring regulatory clarity.

The Committee also focused on Pakistan’s escalating HIV/AIDS crisis, noting over 13,000 new cases reported in 2024. Emphasis was placed on enhancing diagnostic and preventive measures, especially in high-burden districts. Efforts to improve malaria prevention and increase tuberculosis diagnostics were also discussed.

Discussion extended to the restructuring of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), highlighting the need for recruitment to address 115 consultant-level vacancies.

The meeting brought together members of the National Assembly, senior health officials, and the Coordinator to the Prime Minister, reinforcing a collaborative approach to health reform.
