Islamabad: The Speakers’ Forum, a prominent assembly of Pakistan’s parliamentary leaders, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent attack on the convoy of Chaudhry Latif Akbar, the Speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly. The incident has been characterized as a significant threat to democratic principles, prompting urgent measures from National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, Speaker Sadiq has instructed the Secretary of the National Assembly to reach out to AJK’s Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police. The letters demand an immediate investigation into the attack, emphasizing the serious implications for the safety of elected officials.
The communications express concern over the local administration’s failure to provide adequate security despite prior threats against the Speaker. The Forum has requested a comprehensive report on the incident within three days and has called for swift legal action against those involved.
“This attack is not only a direct threat to the safety of parliamentary representatives but also an affront to the principles of democracy and governance,” the letters stated.
The Forum insists that AJK authorities implement immediate measures to prevent future occurrences, warning that such incidents could erode public trust in the nation’s democratic institutions.
The Speaker’s Office reaffirmed the Forum’s dedication to upholding the safety and dignity of public representatives, stressing the necessity of strong security and accountability frameworks.
