Pakistan’s Budget Deliberations Emphasize Human Development and SDG Commitments

Islamabad: Members of Parliament, policy experts, and development practitioners concluded a parliamentary discussion on the Federal Budget 2026-27, underscoring the importance of prioritizing human development, social protection, and climate resilience for Pakistan’s long-term economic stability and sustainable development.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the discussion was organized under the convenorship of Honorable MNA Shaista Pervaiz and focused on evaluating the Federal Budget through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Members from across the political spectrum, including both treasury and opposition benches, deliberated on the budget’s implications for Pakistan’s development trajectory.

Participants noted that while fiscal consolidation and macroeconomic stabilization are important policy objectives, sustainable economic progress cannot be achieved without adequate investment in education, healthcare, and climate adaptation. The discussion highlighted the challenges posed by Pakistan’s demographic trends, with the population projected to reach nearly 400 million by 2050, stressing the need for strategic and targeted investments in human capital and public services.

Members emphasized the importance of aligning budgetary priorities with Pakistan’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The focus was on addressing overcrowded classrooms, overstretched healthcare facilities, and limited employment opportunities through sustained public investment.

The discussion also underscored the significance of investing in girls’ education, maternal and reproductive health, and community-level service delivery mechanisms. Climate resilience was identified as a critical area requiring greater policy attention, with participants stressing the need for investments in adaptation, disaster preparedness, water management, and resilient infrastructure.

Members highlighted that expenditures on education, health, and climate resilience should be viewed as complementary to fiscal responsibility. The conclusion reached was that the Federal Budget should reflect national priorities and future aspirations, aligning with Pakistan’s demographic realities, development needs, and Sustainable Development Goal commitments to ensure inclusive growth and improved quality of life.

The Parliamentary SDGs Taskforce reaffirmed its commitment to supporting evidence-based parliamentary dialogue on sustainable development and strengthening legislative engagement on policies that advance Pakistan’s progress towards the SDGs.
