WASHINGTON D.C., Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, has outlined Pakistan’s concerted efforts to enhance its economic position on the global stage. In a comprehensive interview with Adrienne Ross during the Ambassador Insider Series, jointly organized by Washington Diplomat and the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington D.C., Ambassador Khan detailed Pakistan’s strategies for economic growth and international collaboration.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Khan emphasized Pakistan’s focus on streamlining its economy, improving the trade and investment climate, addressing systemic issues, and actively participating in intergovernmental trade organizations. He acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and other international financial institutions, while stressing the need for long-term solutions to build an economically resilient Pakistan.
Discussing the electoral process in Pakistan, Ambassador Khan confirmed that the nation is preparing for upcoming elections. He highlighted the increasing participation of women in various sectors, including politics, civil services, judiciary, armed forces, and other professional fields, signifying their growing influence in the country’s development.
On press freedom, Ambassador Khan noted the presence of a strong and vibrant media landscape in Pakistan and underlined the importance of responsible journalism and government regulation in informing the citizenry.
He also pointed out the successful business ventures of about 80 US companies in Pakistan, emphasizing the country’s potential as a vast market and a strategic hub for Central and West Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The ambassador highlighted the exponential growth in tech startups, supported by Silicon Valley and US venture capital funds.
In terms of investment opportunities, Ambassador Khan identified energy, IT, agriculture, and the extractive industry as key areas for foreign direct investment in Pakistan. He discussed efforts to streamline the country’s taxation system to meet developmental needs and noted Pakistan’s consistent track record in meeting its financial obligations.
On climate change, the ambassador spoke about the devastating impact of recent floods in Pakistan and efforts to establish a Loss and Damage Fund, building resilient infrastructure and climate-smart agriculture with international support.
Ambassador Khan also touched upon Pakistan’s relations with the Taliban and the ongoing challenges of terrorism. He expressed hope for continued US engagement with Afghanistan and partnership in its development.
Concluding the interview, Ambassador Khan showcased Pakistan’s rich cultural diversity and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for various forms of tourism, including adventure, eco-tourism, religious tourism, mountaineering, and paragliding.
