Pakistani Delegation Promotes Higher Education Collaboration in Sri Lanka


Colombo: A Pakistani academic delegation, led by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, has concluded a significant visit to Sri Lanka aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration in the higher education sector. The visit featured high-level meetings and the successful organization of the Pakistan Higher Education Expo 2026 at several key venues across Sri Lanka.



According to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, the delegation, headed by Project Director Jehanzeb Khan, sought to strengthen ties with Sri Lankan universities and introduce educational opportunities available in Pakistan to Sri Lankan students. The initiative was part of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Higher Education Cooperation Programme, targeting increased mutual cooperation.



The exhibitions were held at prominent institutions including the University of Colombo, Rajarata University in Mihintale, the District Secretariat in Polonnaruwa, and CCL Academy in Kandy. These events attracted a large number of students and parents, who engaged directly with Pakistani academic representatives to gain insights into higher education opportunities, on-campus facilities, and the academic environment in Pakistan. Alumni of the Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships provided additional perspectives by sharing their educational experiences in Pakistan.



During the visit, the delegation engaged in detailed discussions with Maj. Gen. (R.) Dr. Nayyar Naseer, High Commissioner of Pakistan to Sri Lanka, as well as other key figures such as Senior Professor Kapila Seneviratne, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Sri Lanka, and university vice chancellors. The discussions focused on strengthening academic and research relations, highlighting the importance of initiatives such as academic exchanges and research collaborations.



Senior Professor Kapila Seneviratne expressed appreciation for the efforts of HEC and Pakistani universities in fostering connections with Sri Lankan institutions. He reiterated the UGC’s commitment to the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Higher Education Cooperation Programme, acknowledging the potential for productive collaboration in the higher education sector between the two countries.



The meetings with the vice chancellors of the University of Colombo and Rajarata University explored potential collaboration areas, including student and faculty exchanges, joint research initiatives, and joint degree programs. Both sides emphasized the importance of sustained coordination to build on the partnership’s success.
