New York: Pakistan has called for the reinforcement of multilateral institutions to better address global challenges, emphasizing the need for them to be more representative and equitable.
According to Radio Pakistan, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made this appeal at the Informal Meeting of the UN General Assembly. The meeting, titled “Taking Stock of the Pact for the Future – Ministerial Roundtable Two: Making Multilateralism Fit for the Future,” served as a platform for discussing the future of multilateralism.
Ahmad underscored the significance of a revitalized General Assembly, highlighting its Charter-mandated role in international peace and security alongside the Security Council. He also pointed to the Assembly’s increasing relevance in tackling emerging global issues such as artificial intelligence, outer space, and global commons.
In his remarks on reforming the international financial architecture, Ahmad advocated for a more equitable and democratic global economic governance system. He called for expanded access to concessional financing, meaningful debt relief, and the effective implementation of the Sevilla Commitments.
