New York: Pakistan has urged for the universal and equal application of human rights during a general debate in the Third Committee of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. This appeal was made by Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, who emphasized the need to close the gap between human rights principles and their implementation.
According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Jadoon highlighted the ongoing suffering of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, as a critical test of the international community’s dedication to human rights and international law. He called for the protection of civilians, unhindered humanitarian assistance, respect for international law, and accountability, while reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
The Ambassador also drew parallels with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need for a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices, as per UN Security Council resolutions. He criticized India’s actions since August 5, 2019, for increasing repression and restricting fundamental freedoms in the region.
Ambassador Jadoon further addressed the issues of Islamophobia, racism, and xenophobia, underscoring that human dignity should not be contingent on faith, nationality, or identity. He recalled Pakistan’s efforts in establishing March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia and the appointment of a UN Special Envoy to tackle the issue.
He concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, emphasizing the need for the international community to align proclaimed rights with the realities faced by individuals globally.
