Pakistan Unveils National Framework to Combat Child Marriage

Islamabad: In a significant move towards protecting children’s rights, the Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR), in partnership with UNFPA Pakistan, has concluded a pivotal two-day workshop aimed at finalizing the “National Framework to End Child Marriage in Pakistan” at the Best Western Premier in Islamabad.

According to Press Information Department, the workshop featured a speech by Saba Sadiq, Parliamentary Secretary for Human Rights, who underscored child marriage as a fundamental human rights violation that denies children, particularly girls, their health, education, and safety. She discussed the connection between child marriage, gender-based violence, and honor-based practices, asserting the need to address these issues collectively for meaningful social change. Sadiq also called for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to align with Sindh and Punjab in standardizing the legal marriage age across Pakistan. Aziz Iqbal from the Ministry of Human Rights concluded the event by expressing gratitude to the participants for their contributions and discussions.
