New York: Pakistan has expressed reservations over the suggested modifications to the mandate and structure of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The concerns were articulated by Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, despite voting in favor of the UN Security Council resolution to renew the UNMISS mandate.
According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Jadoon argued that the proposed reduction of the troop ceiling to 12,500 is not justified given the deteriorating political and security situation in South Sudan. He emphasized that the mission still holds extensive responsibilities, especially in the protection of civilians and ensuring humanitarian access across a vast geographic area, tasks that necessitate a robust and sustained presence.
