Pakistan Enhances Trafficking in Persons Reporting System with Australian Support

Islamabad: Pakistan, in collaboration with the Australian Government and the International Labour Organization (ILO), is set to advance its capabilities to combat human trafficking through the launch of Phase II of the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Reporting Enhancement project. This initiative aims to bolster the existing TIP hotline and referral systems, improve data management, and increase the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) effectiveness in handling such cases.

According to International Labour Organization, the project’s inauguration was marked by a signing ceremony attended by Neil Hawkins, the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Geir Tonstol, the ILO Country Director for Pakistan, along with the Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency. Building on the successes of its first phase, which established a Management Information System (MIS) for TIP reporting, the current phase will further develop the capabilities of the FIA and enhance the TIP Reporting Portal.

Geir Tonstol expressed enthusiasm about expanding support to the FIA, emphasizing the project’s comprehensive approach to addressing trafficking through prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnerships. He highlighted the importance of fundamental labor rights in fostering a collaborative environment where workers can advocate for their rights.

Neil Hawkins discussed Australia’s commitment to combating human trafficking and modern slavery in Pakistan, framing it as a critical measure for safeguarding human rights and fostering development. The project underscores a joint effort between Pakistan, Australia, and the ILO to develop a robust, coordinated response to protect vulnerable populations and improve both domestic and cross-border anti-trafficking efforts.

The enhanced TIP reporting system is expected to significantly aid in the prevention of trafficking and ensure better protection for at-risk groups in Pakistan.
