Islamabad: Pakistan marked World Health Day with a focus on transforming its healthcare system, emphasizing science and collaboration as key to building a healthier nation. The government highlighted its commitment to preventive healthcare and universal coverage, moving away from a treatment-centric model.
According to Press Information Department, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif addressed the nation, aligning with this year’s theme, “Together for Health-Stand with Science,” which underscores the importance of practical applications of science in promoting human well-being. The Prime Minister emphasized that advancements in science and technology should be harnessed to create effective policies that protect public health and ensure a sustainable future.
The government is actively adopting a model that prioritizes disease prevention and health promotion, with Primary Health Care as a cornerstone for achieving Universal Health Coverage. This approach represents a strategic shift in the healthcare system towards emphasizing good health standards and prevention.
Pakistan is among the pioneers in costing the Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS) at both national and provincial levels. The National Health Support Program aims to expand EPHS implementation at the district level, ensuring all citizens have access to essential healthcare services.
Digital health is poised to play a significant role in the upcoming National Health and Population Policy (2026-2035). Efforts are underway to enhance systems like the District Health Information System-2 (DHIS-2), telemedicine, and data platforms to improve service delivery and decision-making.
The government also highlighted the need to address determinants such as population growth, water and sanitation, and nutrition, adopting a multisectoral approach to these challenges. Strengthening health financing, improving expenditure tracking, and expanding financial protection measures are part of the strategy to prevent healthcare expenses from pushing citizens into poverty.
On this World Health Day, the federal and provincial governments, along with stakeholders, development partners, the private sector, and academic institutions, reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a healthier and more resilient Pakistan through innovation and collaboration.
