Pakistan Challenges India’s Claim Over Kashmir at United Nations

United Nations: Pakistan has firmly rejected India’s assertion that the region of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of its territory, emphasizing that the United Nations and the international community recognize the area’s disputed status.

Representing Pakistan at a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting on peace operations, Consul General Gul Qaiser Sarwani addressed the claims made by Indian Ambassador Proathni Haresh. Haresh had asserted that Kashmir has always been and will remain an integral part of India. In response, Sarwani reiterated that every official UN map designates Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory.

Sarwani highlighted that the legal, political, and historical realities cannot be altered by mere claims. He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is not an integral part of India and has never been so. He stated that the region’s final status should be decided by the people of Jammu and Kashmir through a UN-supervised referendum, as outlined in numerous Security Council resolutions.

The Pakistani representative accused India of forcibly occupying Jammu and Kashmir with a significant military presence, alleging that over 900,000 troops are stationed in the territory. He claimed that more than 100,000 Kashmiris have been killed since 1989 and that India has the largest military deployment in the region.

Sarwani also accused India of committing grave human rights violations in the disputed territory, citing reports confirmed by the United Nations. He criticized India’s portrayal of itself as a victim, calling it a deliberate attempt to label the freedom struggle as terrorism.

He urged India to focus on its actions abroad, accusing it of involvement in targeted killings, sabotage, and terrorism through banned organizations such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and the Majid Brigade.

The statements from Sarwani come amidst ongoing tensions and disputes over the status of Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has been a focal point of conflict between India and Pakistan for decades.
