Pakistan Calls on UN to Tackle AI-Driven Security Threats

New York: Pakistan has raised concerns about the growing security challenges linked to military artificial intelligence technologies and urged the United Nations to spearhead nuclear disarmament efforts.

During the General Debate of the United Nations Disarmament Commission 2025, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted the potential risks posed by military AI technologies. He warned that these technologies could trigger new arms races and destabilize regional and global security environments.

Ambassador Ahmad called for nuclear-armed states to renew their efforts and demonstrate a commitment to disarmament. He emphasized the importance of fulfilling both legal and political obligations to reduce nuclear threats.

Additionally, Ahmad advocated for a universal, unconditional, and legally binding treaty to protect non-nuclear states from nuclear threats. This move, he suggested, would offer necessary security assurances to nations without nuclear capabilities.

The statements underscore Pakistan’s stance on the need for international cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by advancing military technologies.
