Pakistan Calls for Reassessment of R2P Doctrine in Response to Crises in Gaza and Kashmir

New York: Pakistan has urged a critical reassessment of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine at the 97th plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, citing the situations in Gaza and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) as evidences of the doctrine’s inadequacy.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, The appeal was made by Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In his address, Ambassador Akram pointed to the ongoing crises in Gaza and the severe human rights violations in IIOJK as glaring examples of R2P’s failure to prevent genocide and war crimes against humanity.

Ambassador Akram detailed the significant humanitarian crises and the large-scale atrocities reported in both regions, calling for immediate international intervention. He noted that Genocide Watch had issued warnings two years prior about the potential for genocide in Kashmir, where severe repression continues against the local population seeking self-determination.

The ambassador emphasized the urgent need for the Special Advisor on the Responsibility to Protect to recognize and act on Pakistan’s concerns, particularly focusing on the dire situation in Kashmir and broader issues within India.
